The first version of the Windows operating system was launched in 1985, introducing text-based operating systems to MS-DOS users that were then Microsoft OS with graphics and a computer mouse.
Many of Windows 1 and later versions basically run on top of MS-DOS and will rely on DOS for many features rather than being run as a true standalone operating system. Microsoft launched an early version of Windows 99 in 1995 in a massive marketing campaign. It introduces the world to the famous Windows Start menu. It was also the first version of Microsoft’s first web browser, Internet Explorer.
Windows ME, released in 2000, was the last run on top of DOS. The following year, Microsoft released Windows XP, which has been used in many businesses for more than a decade and has been praised by both critics and users. Subsequent versions included the less successful Windows Vista as well as current versions of home and office PCs known as Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Windows 9 does not exist due to the possibility that users and programs may confuse it with Windows 95 or Windows 98 when trying to determine the version of the software.
Windows 10, released in 2015, provides support for desktops, laptops and tablets. Instead of rolling out another radically different operating system in the near future, Microsoft has publicly stated that it wants to roll out extended updates to Windows 10.
In addition to creating software for home and business PC users, Microsoft has long developed software for servers, including the Windows version, high-powered machines that power websites and large organizations.

In 1993, Microsoft introduced it as Windows NT. It was an operating system designed for servers and high-powered work-stations; the running code was different from the DOS-based PC version of Windows available. In 2000, a new server product called Windows 2000 Server was released. All later server-based versions of Windows will have their own Windows Server, starting with today’s version, first known as Windows Server 2016 and now simply known as Windows Server. Server operating systems, which typically support more powerful computers and are designed to be used by multiple users simultaneously, are designed for background-loaded workloads rather than directly interfering with users.
Microsoft has released a number of operating systems for smartphones and earlier for personal data assistants. Early versions released in the late nineties used the Windows “CE” brand name for the “compact version” and the devices were much less powered and simpler than today’s smartphones.

In the earlier 2000s, Windows-powered operating systems were introduced as “Windows Mobile” for phones and PDAs known as pocket PCs. Windows Mobile 6.5 was first launched with a modern smartphone app store like the iPhone and Android offers, which was released in 2009.
But the following year, the company released a new operating system that kept the number but, like Windows Phone on, changed the word “mobile” to “phone.” It has introduced many unique features including tiles for individual applications. The software was critically acclaimed and loved by some users but failed to gain traction at the level of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems.
The latest phone software is known as Windows 10 Mobile and is designed to emphasize its compatibility with desktop OS. It is only available for a limited number of phones and is not widely accepted. 0 0 0.
